Coode St Residence

A partnership with HNIS, this small addition was designed from the inside out.

Summary

Partnered with Helena Nikola Interior Studio (HNIS), this major addition to a 1920s cottage in Bayswater highly prioritises interior proportion, finish and fixtures on a small block.

Architecturally, the project reconsiders the traditional position of the backyard (at the back…), instead opting for two central courtyards, transversed by a glass-bound hallway. By separating the mass of the new and old, more mass can be situated much closer to the side boundaries, optimizing the northern orientation and plot ratio. Further benefits included better acoustic separation between living and sleeping spaces, and superior compartmentalization of air conditioning.

Interior materials are kept honest and raw, with the exterior brick envelope in bagged brick, exposed on the outside and in, throughout. Complimenting finishes of concrete, bagged brick, timber black frames create a timeless canvass for the occupant’s beautiful collect of furniture and art.

Featuring vaulted feature ceilings, massive northern openings, a fully renovated existing residence and highly considered cabinetwork, including a fully tiled kitchen plinth, this small project illustrates the fantastic outcome when Architect, Interior Architect and Client are all in-step.
