Hawthorne Residence

A floating extruded block to frame views to the Ocean, with a hidden roof deck.

Summary

Whilst technically an addition, the existing large garage was maintained and some perimeter retaining, every habitable space in the resultant design is new. Situated in Ocean Reef, set back up the hill, with panoramic views the West to the Ocean and beyond, the orientation of the home was clear. Whilst the views to the west were required to be captured, making use of the corner block to ensure efficient northern light to counter-balance the west openings was pertinent. The resultant form, and ‘L’ shape was created, with a dominant upper floor suspended over the alfresco, utilizing the mass of the building for cover. Furthermore, this open section serves to minimize the mass of the building, to maintain relevant neighbouring views.

The home is zoned into distinct areas, with multiple external access point, so that it can easily be occupied by guests without imposing on the owners, and providing a sense of individuality and freedom to all.

The upper floor is an extruded box, creating shade for the openings, and sits on a bagged brick ground floor plane, for a subtle textural change. Hidden in the roof level is an integrated roof deck, providing panoramic views, whilst complying with required height.

The material palette is clean and timeless, featuring a mixture of black windows and door frames, timber floors and cabinetwork, white plaster and concrete features blade walls and exposed concrete soffits.

Project completed and awaiting photography.
