Bodley Residence #2
A singular sweeping roof form shelters the inhabitants and creates a connection to the site.
Whilst the third phase of their home renovation was occurring in Perth (see Bodley Residence), the client had an opportunity to buy a beautiful bush block in coveted Margert River.
The land had a newly finished kit home already on site, and a large shed, both of good quality. Whilst the small home was perfect for weekend getaways, it was not sufficient for longer stays, or even the dreamed permanent move ‘down south.’
A significant extension was proposed, structurally and spatially independent from the existing structures, nestled within the kit home and shed.
This addition was imagined as a large wing, a mostly single roof pitch which fell with the contours of the site. In plan the ‘kylie’ shape of the roof encompasses the house, and the necessary north and west shading, with a subtle curved connection.
The addition features the main living, kitchen and dining areas, allowing the existing kit home to be a dedicated children’s wing.
Sunken into the landscape the home’s form sits within a series of battered retaining walls. The resultant levels mean that the eye line of the inhabitants is more in-line with the significant trees at the rear of the property, establishing a sense of environmental connection. Further emphasising this connection is the internal material palette, with the use of earthen tiles to ‘ground’ the design.
The home is constructed of high-quality oversized lightweight construction, allowing significant insulation credentials whilst meeting the necessary BAL levels for fire resistance.
